High-throughput approach to investigate the cooling rate sensitivity of novel, secondary wrought aluminium alloys

The increasing amount of aluminium scrap and the urgent need to reduce energy consumption and CO2 emissions, requires the development of alloys that can tolerate high levels of impurity elements and therefore high contents of brittle intermetallic phases (IMPs). Understanding how these brittle IMPs can be modified and controlled during the casting process and subsequent thermomechanical processing is crucial for the development of novel, secondary wrought aluminium alloys with high impurity content. A decisive factor is the cooling rate during casting, which influences the type, size, and morphology of these IMPs. Therefore, a crucible with a defined cooling rate gradient was designed. This setup allows for a controlled gradient of cooling rates within a single ingot, which can be further subjected to thermomechanical processing. In order to correlate the IMP morphologies with processability and mechanical properties, a hybrid AI segmentation model for IMP detection is established.
