Abstract

The Amazon river basin presents challenging conditions for strontium (Sr) isotope ratio analysis due to extremely low Sr concentrations, high Rb/Sr ratios, and low ionic strength. This contribution applies a diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT) passive sampling method to assess Sr concentrations and 87Sr/86Sr isotope ratios in Amazonian rivers. Laboratory tests and in situ deployments in the Rio Negro, Solimões, and Amazon River show that DGT enables accurate Sr quantification and 87Sr/86Sr isotope ratio assessment, achieving up to 16-fold Sr preconcentration
without inducing detectable isotopic fractionation. The method captures large spatial and seasonal 87Sr/86Sr isotope ratio variability linked to Amazon basin geodiversity. Binary mixing at the confluence of Rio Negro and Solimões was confirmed. DGT passive sampling proved to be a robust tool for 87Sr/86Sr analysis in dynamic freshwater environments, even under extreme hydrochemical conditions.
