The mining industry is currently responsible for approximately 5% of the world’s energy consumption of which 40% is associated with grinding of ore in milling operations (Sandvik AB, 2012). Grinding is known to be very inefficient in terms of various criteria including energy consumption, cost of capital, labour, maintenance materials, power and consumables (G. S Lane, 2002). Sandvik has launched the Vibrocone CO865 crusher that promises significant comminution performance improvements when compared with the conventional cone crusher and contribute to the drive for energy efficient comminution in mining. The report details the findings from material sampling & analysis along with machine parameter and duty measurements detailing the performances achieved in operation by the Vibrocone and the conventional Hydrocone cone crusher operating within the same circuit under the same conditions. When operating with similar specific energy consumption [kWh/t] a much improved size distribution and higher fines production is achieved by the Vibrocone along with measured Bond Index reductions of the crusher product when compared with the conventional Hydrocone. Sample data collected by the mine was obtained and used for the analysis of the size distributions reduction ratios and other crusher product characteristics. The crusher product characteristic variance was analysed with varying crusher parameters to define an operating window for ore of this nature.
