Airflow Behaviour and Ventilation Design in Tunnels

Activity: Talk or presentation Invited talk

Description

This lecture examines the fluid-dynamic behaviour of air in tunnels, emphasising its role in transporting dust, smoke, heat, and toxic gases. The primary objective of tunnel ventilation is to control airflow to ensure safety and comfort for users. Key air properties, including density, pressure, temperature, and velocity, are discussed, along with fundamental relationships such as Bernoulli’s equation for ideal and real fluids, momentum considerations, and flow resistance. Design factors influencing ventilation, such as tunnel length, wall smoothness, and fan power requirements, are analysed. The lecture further presents airflow simulations in single- and double-track railway tunnels, illustrating the effects of jet fan placement, tunnel obstacles, and train-induced airflow on ventilation performance.
