Abstract
An analysis was conducted to gage the feasibility of using a spectroscopic method to determine the chemical composition of the liquid metal phase in EAF and BOF steelmaking. The hypothesis that certain radiation intensities found in UV- and UV-near regions of an spectrum emitted from the hot-spot in the BOF or the impingement area of oxyfuel burners in EAF steelmaking can be used for analysing the chemical components present in the liquid metal is tested. Significant lab-scale experiment results and the conclusions regarding industrial scale implementation are presented.
