Analytical Estimation of Required Backfill Strength for the Case Mine

Abstract

Backfill forms a key element of the planned underground open stoping layout at the underground mine, which is still in the design phase. However, numerical methods can be time-consuming and resource-intensive during the early stages of design, and data are often limited, so analytical approaches are typically used instead at this stage. The combined effects of geometry, exposure conditions, sequencing, arching behaviour and surcharge loading on the required backfill strength remain difficult to quantify. In this thesis, analytical design methods are applied within a structured parameter framework to evaluate how these factors govern backfill stability and to predict the corresponding strength requirements. The results provide practical guidance for selecting minimum backfill strengths under different operational scenarios, making mine planning easier and more informed.
