Abstract
Companies are challenged with ongoing changes in market- and customer requirements. Nowadays, in times of the fourth industrial revolution, it is getting more important for industrial companies to consider and implement digitization projects. A term that is gaining importance as a result of the progress made in digitization is mixed reality. Mixed reality is a construct that combines the advantages of augmented reality and those of virtual reality. This technology can be used with mobile handhelds and with head mounted displays. The user of such a system is supported by embedded information in the user’s field of view. Mixed reality simplifies work processes in various sub-areas of the industry. Furthermore, machine- and plant downtimes can be minimized through the efficient and effective use of mixed reality in maintenance. Shorter downtimes will lead to reduced downtime costs. To accompany the practical implementation of a mixed reality system in an industrial environment, this master thesis is written in cooperation with Mayr-Melnhof Karton, based in Frohnleiten. The firm exists at this location since 1888 and has grown significantly over time. Due to various innovations, investments in infrastructure and expansions of various production plants Mayr-Melnhof Karton has become the market- and technology leader in the segment recycled carton board. In order to stay ahead, the times as well as the digitization impulse must be followed. For this reason, an integration of mixed reality in the plant is being considered. Therefore, the potentials of mixed reality should be analyzed. To collect data, an online survey was created and sent to various industrial companies and expert interviews with four people of Mayr-Melnhof Karton were conducted. Based on the findings of the interviews and the survey, an implementation guide with recommendations for actions, were elaborated for Mayr-Melnhof Karton Frohnleiten and the resulting criteria and requirements for a successful implementation of mixed reality were described.
