Abstract
In the coming years and decades, the demand for coal will steadily decline due to the transition to renewable energies, general climate policy, and technological progress. The European Union is also striving for its member states to become climate-neutral within the next years. Poland has committed itself to this goal, which is gradually reducing the need for coal. As a result, currently operating coal mines are being shut down, raising the question of how to deal with these infrastructures after their closure. In particular, the economic dependence of entire regions on coal mining poses a significant challenge. While numerous reuse possibilities exist, it is often difficult to determine which option may be the most suitable. To simplify this process, a decision-making system was developed as part of this Master thesis, based on literature research and expert surveys, with the aim of providing guidance on how to proceed with a mine after its closure. Within this framework, 15 different reuse possibilities were examined in more detail to identify which criteria must be met in order for them to be applied in a closed mine. Based on this information, and with the involvement of expert opinions, an evaluation framework was created to provide guidance on how an underground coal mine can be best repurposed. In addition to technical aspects, social, economic, legal, and infrastructural requirements were also considered to gain a comprehensive overview of all relevant areas. The outcome is a ranking in which the 15 different reuse possibilities are listed according to their suitability for the mine, thereby reducing the need for further feasibility studies.
