For producing nanocomposites by using melt blending technology the residence time and the shear rate are the two main relevant factors. Consequentially the set up of the line and respectively the chosen process parameters are crucial for the quality of the composites. A problem emerges from the reverse behavior of these two influencing variables. The attempt of this diploma thesis is to maximise the residence time and the shear force by changing the screw geometry, the screw speed and by using auxiliary means like a melt pump. An organic modified silicate layered mineral acts as a filler. Different grades of polypropylene are used and the compatibilizer is maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene (PP-g-MSA). A clear dependence of the mechanical qualities on the amount of added compatibilizer was investigated. By fitting a melt pump to the process the mechanical properties were increased for all samples and the residence time was almost doubled. Furthermore a processing window for the screw speed was determined. If the speed is too low, few shear energy is appealed on the silicate layers. But if the screws turn too fast, the residence time is not adequate. Concluding the results, carefully chosen process parameters, a well designed screw geometry and the application of auxiliary means like a melt pump can improve the mechanical properties of nanocomposites considerably.
