Abstract

This master's thesis is concerned with experimental testing of a drum-type magnetic separator optimised for maximum flux density, whose sorting capacity is contrasted with existing magnet systems with similar magnetic properties. The first part provides a detailed explanation of solid-state magnetism based on its foundations in physics and puts it into the context of what happens in magnetic sorting processes. Measurement of magnetic flux is a central topic for the comparability of different magnetic systems in this study. To this end, a special measuring device has been developed in order to minimise systematic errors in the Hall effect sensor guidance. Furthermore, the optimised magnet system and the improvements made to it – in terms of its design and also the materials – and the problem of eddy currents occurring during operation are discussed. The description of the sampling and sample preparation as well as the characterisation of the samples for the test series allows for some concrete statements regarding the sortability of the selected feed material even prior to running the tests. After completion of the test, the various products were subject to hand-picking, with classification according to visual characteristics. The evaluation of the test results has shown that – depending on the grain size of the feed material – the optimised magnet system delivers equally good or better sorting results than the existing magnet system.
