Abstract

Additive manufacturing by L-PBF is gaining increasing commercial and scientific interest during the past decade. AlSi10Mg is a frequently used alloy in this field, because of its high lightweight potential. This precipitation hardening alloy is commonly used as cast in combination with a T6 or T7 heat treatment. The process conditions of L-PBF are mainly different to those from casting, which led to alternative heat treatment strategies and raised mechanical properties. The current work shows the influence of process parameters, such as pre-heating temperature, the surface roughness and different heat treatment strategies onto the mechanical properties. The investigations are performed by means of tensile tests, hardness measurements and metallographic analysis of the microstructure. It can be shown that the superior mechanical properties of additively processed AlSi10Mg are just lowered, if a T6 treatment is used. The very fine microstructure, caused by the L-PBF process, offers elevated strength`s compared to the as cast conditions. Direct ageing (T5) is a suggested way to make this property useable. Elevated pre-heating temperatures could reduce residual stresses but also influences the final heat-treatment strategy. Finally, it is shown that the preparation methods of the metallographic specimens could have a major impact onto porosity measurements for different heat treatment conditions.
