Abstract

Montanwerke Brixlegg AG plans to implement a brick press to prepare residuals like dusts and sludges as well as secondary raw materials containing fine copper for recycling by means of a shaft furnace. A minimum compressive strength of 5 MPa is needed, that the briquettes withstand the feed process falling from a height of 2 m. Within the thesis several circulating components comprising dusts, sludges and coarser grained raw materials were characterized for briquetting relevant properties like size distribution, moisture content, materials´ density bulk density and elemental composition. Literature study and consultation of specialists for hydraulic binders provided the base to find an appropriate binder (cement), which was proved feasible in preliminary test series. In addition to first improvised tests at pilot scale at the smelter site, a laboratory load cell (maximum load 5 kN) used for uniaxial compressive strength testing was adjusted for the use as a briquette press by constructing a spring based stamp for controlled application of press force. A reproducible test method physically simulating the steps of dosing, mixing, pressing, induration as well as quality testing was established. All the raw and circuit materials were tested in systematic parameter variation tests to develop recipes obeying to the quality constraints. First mixtures for all the materials could be found with a compressive strength higher than 5 MPa.
