Abstract

The present thesis deals with the characterization of the columnar solidified dendritic structure by using primary and secondary dendrite arm spacings (λ1 and λ2), and the Primary Grain Size (PGS). The formed primary structure, within a solidifying strand shell is an important factor in relation to the formation of hot tears and is therefore discussed in detail in the literature survey of the thesis. The experimentally achievable solidification structures of different laboratory methods were also identified. One of these laboratory tests is the Submerged Split Chill Tensile (SSCT) method which is developed further at the Chair of Metallurgy. In view of the above mentioned parameters of the solidification structure a St52 steel sample of the SSCT - test has been evaluated by using well-defined guidelines. The measured values were set in ratio to each other (λ1/λ2 and λ1/PGS) to provide a simple and rapid conclusion of one measured size to the other. In addition to this analysis, different slab samples were assessed on their primary structure and set in ratio to each other. The result can briefly be summarized as follows: At the samples of the laboratory experiment (Steel: St52) a ratio between λ1 and λ2 of 3.1 was found. At the investigated slab samples for steel 1 (0.75 wt -%C), a ratio of 1.82, for steel 2 (0.66 wt -%C) and steel 3 (0.21 wt -%C) a ratio of 2.00 and 2.35 were found. The ratio between 1 and PGS at the evaluated St52 steel sample of a SSCT - test series was 4.9. The determined ratios of the slab samples were 4.9 (steel 1), 5.3 (steel 2) and 2.7 (steel 3), respectively.
