The artificial shortage of critical raw materials brought about by export ratios and mining in politically unstable regions have led to specific interventions from the European Union over the last few years to secure long-term supply of said materials. In the future, part of our demand for these materials could be supplied by recovering them from waste. The focus is on a waste stream from waste electronic and electrical equipment (fine material 0 – 6 mm). This thesis discusses possible challenges of further mechanical treatment and provides basic information on the physical and chemical composition of fine material. In addition, the thesis deals with the question whether it is possible to recover the precious metal copper from the examined waste stream while enriching critical raw materials in the residual material flows. Waste sorting analysis was used to show which kinds of material groups the fine material is composed of and in which of these groups, critical raw materials get enriched. Subsequently, the different samples were analysed with the help of inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Based on a pilot-scale processing experiment a material flow analysis was conducted to highlight mass balances on the element level and product level. Sankey diagrams were used to illustrate the enrichment levels of critical raw materials during copper recovery in various waste streams. It can be seen that the waste stream is largely made up of fine material smaller than 1 mm (38 %) and hard plastics (20 %). The critical raw materials are found in all sorting groups with very few exceptions (e.g. wood). The purities of the copper fractions, obtained during the processing experiment,varied from 57 to 91%. In the ferromagnetic fractions, for example, rare earth elements were concentrated.
