Development of abrasion-resistant coatings for industrial pump systems

Machine manufacturers are often faced with the challenge that components in contact with media must fulfil extreme requirements for corrosion and wear resistance. In the chemical- and raw material extraction industry or the energy industry, many processes generate reaction products that have an abrasive and corrosion-accelerated effect on the materials. For this reason, many plants and machines have a shortened service life and increased maintenance intervals. In the course of this work, an abrasion-resistant polymer coating was developed to protect machines and equipment against corrosion and wear. Since a comprehensive understanding of the influencing factors on the resulting properties of the coating is of essential importance for the later application, a parameter study of the influencing variables (polymer matrix, size of the fillers, filler content, etc.) on a laboratory scale was carried out in the first step. In the further course, the coating was optimized with additives and additional fillers based on the results obtained in the laboratory studies. To obtain information on the tribological wear and friction processes occurring, rotatory model tests were carried out on a tribometer to accompany the laboratory study. Based on the findings from these tests, a test chain was developed in order to be able to guarantee application-oriented testing of the coating. The overall aim of this work was to gain a fundamental understanding of the tribological processes involved. This includes the effects of the type and quantity of the composition of the polymer coating (matrix, dimension, and content of the fillers) on the wear and friction behavior. Besides, the further development of the model experiments towards application-oriented experiments created the basis for the transferability of the results.
