Abstract

Phosphorus as an alloying element decreases the oxygen content of copper. Therefore the mechanical properties are improved and the porosity and reactivity of the hydrogen are reduced. But the phosphorus content has to be limited due to the decreasing of the electrical conductivity. The following work describes the reduction of the oxygen- and hydrogen content by using suitable gas purging systems in the Montanwerke Brixlegg INC., as well as the relationships between the elements phosphorus, oxygen and hydrogen. For this purpose, a rotor of Foseco Ltd. Company and bottom purging elements of Zaklady Magnezytowe ROPCZYCE S.A. were applied. In several series of investigations and single experiments, the results achieved in that way were compared to the actual situation in the foundry of Montanwerke Brixlegg INC. For the experiments the parameters bath temperatur, quality of cathodes, treatment of the charcoal, deoxidant Calciumhexaborid, rotor speed and volume flow were investigated.
