Abstract

To meet the increasing demands upon the mechanical properties of modern steels, the importance of non-metallic inclusions in steel is increasing. The requirements for number, size, morphology, and chemical composition of NMIs in steels are becoming increasingly stringent, making the control of inclusions an essential aspect in the production of modern steels. Inclusion treatment in secondary metallurgy is a vital means of ensuring the necessary degrees of purity. In addition to slag treatment, direct modification of inclusions is also becoming an increasingly important area for improving the mechanical properties of steels. This work compares methods for introducing alkali elements into steel melts and using them to modify non-metallic inclusions. Na and K were used as carbonates for this purpose, and various methods of charging the melt were tested. Carbonate-filled steel tubes and self-produced pellets were used for this purpose. These were then added to a steel melt covered with slag, and their behavior and handling were evaluated. It was determined that adding pellets was the better method, two steel samples were treated with Na2CO3 and K2CO3 pellets, respectively. To determine how the treatment affects non-metallic inclusions and whether indirect and/or direct modification occurred, the steel samples were analyzed using SEM/EDX measurements, and the data was evaluated. The discovery of alkalis in the NMI indicates that direct modification has occurred. Indirect modification has been verified by changes in the number, ECD and chemical composition of the NMI.
