Abstract

Mould powders play a central role in the continuous casting of steel: The tasks of the mould powders or mould powder slags include lubrication between the mold and the steel strand, control of heat dissipation from the solidifying molten steel, absorption of deoxidation products, and prevention of reoxidation and thermal insulation of the liquid steel. During the casting process, mould powder is constantly applied to the surface of the molten steel in the mold. Due to the high temperatures, the powder is melted and forms a layer of slag, which continuously flows into the gap between the mold and the steel strand and is thus consumed. The mould powder consumption is influenced not only by the physical properties of the casting powder, but also by the oscillation settings and the casting speed. Mould powder consumption provides important information about the process: Too high powder consumption leads to increased costs, while too low consumption leads to increased friction, which in turn can cause sticking of the shell to the mold, cracking or even sticker breakouts. In this thesis, an overview of the average mould powder consumption of different powders on different continuous slab casters under comparable casting conditions is given. The measuring systems of the individual plants are considered, the data transmission systematically investigated, and the determination of the consumption values ensured. Using the evaluated process data, a suitable range is determined for the respective powder consumptions under certain influencing parameters. Using the data obtained, a model for calculating mould powder consumption is validated and adapted to current conditions.
