Research output: ThesisMaster's Thesis

Warehouse Management Systems (WMS) are some of the most complex IT-systems. Therefore, extensive configuration is needed in order to fulfil the customer’s require-ments. Analysing the business processes of customers and configurating the WMS are main tasks of the logistics consultancy on the part of the software service provider.
Based on this motivation, challenges in requirement engineering were identified in the course of this master thesis. A checklist was developed, which can be used by the Logistics Consultancy in the future to ensure improvement of the results of re-quirements engineering. In addition, the developed checklist supports the compa-ny, with which this work was done, in implementing further improvements.
The essential elements of intra-logistics served as a basis for understanding the pro-cess. The setup and function of warehouses as well as the processes of a warehouse were considered. Thus, the whole business process from the receipt of goods to pick-ing and the outgoing of goods was covered for the checklist. Furthermore, the func-tions of WMS and interfaces to other IT-systems were observed.
In a second step methods of investigating the customer’s needs as well as docu-menting the results were analysed. Besides, aspects of teams and stakeholders, the workflow of the requirements engineering, and change management were consid-ered.
By combining these diverse influencing factors, a comprehensive picture of the need for improvement in requirements engineering was created. The checklist should sup-port the work of the Logistics Consultancy when configurating Warehouse Manage-ment Systems in the future.
