Abstract

Four electro-slag remelting units have been installed at the company Böhler Edelstahl GmbH & Co KG in Kapfenberg between 1964 and 1982. For lifting and lowering the electrodes and chill-moulds each unit is equipped with three lifting units. Since these lifting units were installed, they were improved regularly, and the electronic converter has been renewed. Some components have remained unmodified. The lifting units are not standardised, consequently they cannot be used for every electro-slag remelting unit, which results in an intensive spare part management and maintenance. The lowering speed of the electrodes is approximately 0.1 mm/s, whereas the maxi-mum lifting speed is approximately 120 to 130 mm/s. The lifting speed of the chill moulds is up to the height of the melting bath. The remelting speed depends on the melting rate and diversifies on block size and quality. It can be concluded, that for a constant remelting process a wide range of speed according to torque is necessary. The aim of this thesis is dimensioning a new lifting unit, which is usable for electrodes and chill-moulds at every electro-slag remelting unit. In addition, better possibilities for the weighing process of the electrodes should be investigated. The content of this thesis is separated into three different parts. The first part contains an extensive literature research of all parts concerning the lifting unit (engine, gearbox, clutch, rope drum, rope) and weighing cell. The middle section includes the concept determination, calculation and dimensioning of the new lifting unit. The concluding part contains a description of the 3D-construction. The conclusion of this thesis is a new lifting unit with reduced size and state-of-the-art technology. The remelting process remains unchanged. The new lifting units can be adopted at three of the four units at the facility and spare part management is significantly relieved.
