Abstract
The realization of the Brenner Base Tunnel is one of Austria’s largest tunnelling projects in the next years. 32 km of the tunnel’s length will be located on Austrian federal territory. Based on the complex geological conditions only a small amount of the excavation material is usable for concrete additives or filling material. Current plans foresee the dumping of the residual excavation material. To show the project’s enormous potential in terms of efficient raw material use, the three main rock types found at Brenner are analysed and effective recycling possibilities are presented. In detail the chemical and mineralogical composition of the analysed rock types are compared with the raw material industry’s requirements. If accordance occurs, the feasible industrial applications are declared. The goal is to recycle the tunnel excavation material in Tyrolean industrial plants. The legal conditions are also mentioned in this master thesis. According to the Austrian law tunnel excavation material is considered as waste. In the course of the research activities within this thesis the legal conditions are not taken into account.
