Abstract

In consideration of efficient commodity usage and sustainable mineral supplies the scale of raw material losses has to be minimised. Based on detailed onsite surveys raw material losses can be categorised in the following groups: .)insufficient or non-periodic maintenance of equipment or equipment parts, e.g. worn wipers or broken processing .)overcharge of aggregates .)improper mechanical handling In summary raw materials losses are mainly caused by improper maintenance or service. A typical example can be given by considering a conveyer belt with a considerable belt alignment which causes a mineral loss and also leads to a clogging of driver rolls. Therefore an anticipated maintenance planning should necessarily be carried out. From the technical point of view this would minimise the scale of raw material losses. Another important measure can be seen in staff training and awareness rising of commodity losses. Considering the plant section „mineral processing“ it is recommended all equipment in the plant section should be checked at least once a shift. The shift check could be carried out by delivery staff. Incorporating this measure, problems causing the loss of raw materials can immediately be detected and eliminated, thus facilitating the reintroduction of the lost minerals in the process. Furthermore undesirable material mixing can be contained and the amount of actual disposal can be reduced. About 150 employees were educated on the topic of „raw material losses“ in work-shops, trying to raise awareness of this important topic. The material flow software „STAN“ was utilised for detailed documentation. During the evaluation of the current situation in the plant a total of 290 improvement suggestions were collected for the plant Radenthein. Some of these suggestions have already been implemented successfully. The overall aim is to implement all actions established by the catalogue of measures in the next years (considering the priority in terms of cast, product quality and emissions). In the future these measures shall improve the regardful handling of raw materials and equipment. Conclusion: Raw material losses cannot be prevented totally in the raw material and manufacturing industry. However they can be reduced significantly in most cases. Raw material losses do not just lead to increased material costs but also to a reduced mixing quality, an increasing amount of degraded materials and an impact on employees and the environment.
