Abstract

The aim of the present work is the investigation of the flow behaviour of liquid films on an inclined plate at a test stand at the chair for process technology and industrial environmental protection. Therefore laser optical measurements using the measurement method of particle image velocimetry (PIV) were carried out. PIV is an imaging technique with which the velocity field of the running film down the inclined plate is shown. During the investigation certain parameters that have influence on the flow behaviour are varied to gain experiences with the experimental setup and the measurement system used. The varied parameters include the flow rate, the viscosity of the fluid, the angle of the plate, the influence of a disturbing object in the flow, as well as material and surface structure of the plate. As there were still major problems with the functionality of the test stand at the beginning of work, this work is also focused on the optimization of the test stand besides the actual measurements. Key points are the tightness of the system and the flow of the liquid onto the plate. In the future the influence of various parameters on the liquid flow shall be brought in context with the effects observed in packed columns using the measurement data. Thus model calculations can be validated which in return allow the description of the flow within the packed columns. The results of the investigations show that at the present time only qualitative statements and no quantitative evidence to the flow behaviour can be made, because despite the optimized liquid flow the film along the plate is not perfectly homogeneous.
