Ultra-fine wires are currently the thinnest steel products on the world market. Despite their small diameter of up to 50 microns (this is finer than a human hair) they withstand tensile strengths up to 5000 N / mm². In 2013, Division voestalpine Metal Engineering decided to purchase a fine wire factory in Fürstenfeld. Through the analysis of fine wire production and its sensitive response to minimal variations in the metallurgical and material characteristics of the input material, the entire production chain should be optimized for accuracy. The aim of this work is to identify and implement optimization measures for the production of eutectoid fine wire, which is used as reinforcement for tires and conveyor belts, as a cutting wire for silicon wafers and as a music wire. Particular attention has been paid to the subtleties of manufacturing processes and manufacturing requirements, which differ from the ordinary manufacturing of conventional wires. During the analysis of the production process, the process chain of the fine wire mill was examined for possible bottlenecks and manufacturer requirements, and solutions were identified. Among other influences, it was quickly recognized that the surface morphology of the wire, non-metallic inclusions (NME), segregations and other microstructural defects in the primary material constrained the wire in terms of its maximum strength and thus also have potential for optimization. The focus was on the design of the process to avoid these wire defects and resulting fractures. It was also evaluated their dangerousness for the quality of the fine wire. Finally, all manufacturer requirements for an optimal production environment were summarized and the interactions of the processes between each other and especially with the fine wire were shown. In addition, the special case of the coupled systems was examined and its problems were discussed. For the identification of unclear relationships, solution approaches were presented, that make these knowledge gaps manageable. Through targeted implementation of specific measures, it was possible to increase the quality and productivity of the ultrafine wire product.
