Abstract
A fractographic method has been developed to characterize fracture surfaces of refractory materials showing a course grain/matrix structure. This method is based on a optical stereoscopic measurement, the generation of a digital fracture surface model, and a computer-supported evaluation to determine the autocorrelation function and lateral correlation length. For refractory materials, a relationship has been found between the lateral correlation length and parameters that were derived from fracture mechanics characterization and reflect the brittleness of the materials. Fractographic analysis has been carried out on fracture surfaces produced by a fracture mechanics method, the wedge splitting test.
