Abstract

In the last few years, the need for integrated reservoir characterization has evolved in the petroleum industry. The reason for the increased interest in this area of study is the desire to optimize exploration and production activities and to maximize profits and recovery from producing assets. The basis for this approach is the formation of interdisciplinary teams of geologists, geophysicists and petroleum engineers, in which the results of the individual disciplines are combined and integrated interactively to obtain a credible and reliable reservoir description. Due to the iterative nature of the reservoir characterization process and the strong interdependences among the involved disciplines, the integrated approach promises improved results and a better use of existing capabilities. The gap between the disciplines can only be overcome by team members, who have, besides specialist skills, a thorough understanding of the reservoir characterization process and good knowledge about all involved disciplines; this is an essential prerequisite to successful data integration and to a successful study. The work at hand is regarded as a learning tool for team members of all disciplines to acquire integration skills. A training program intended for an industrial on-job course was set up. In order to create a training model, the best practice reservoir characterization workflow was applied to a practical field example; an organisational schedule as well as a knowledge repository for the tutor and tutorials for the trainees are provided in this work.
