In the present the search for new mineral sites is increasing to cover own needs on the one hand and to be less dependent on imports on the other hand. Graphite is a very important raw material at the moment. The demand is increasing steadily, also due to the growing electromobility. In Austria, too, new locations are being sought, or those that may still have a mineable deposit are new evaluated, as it is in Amstall, Waldviertel. The investigations in Amstall are part of the POTGRAF project, which is carried out by the Geological Survey of Austria under the direction of Mag. Römer. Until the end of the 20th century, about 100,000 tonnes were mined here. On the basis of former recording documents and the geology of the former open pit, those areas were evaluated, which may still contain graphite. These areas have been studied by modern geophysical exploration methods (measurement of the self-potential (SP), the induced polarisation (IP) and the electrical resistance). Based on these measurement results, which provide information, if there are still graphite deposits worth mining in the Amstall region. First, SP anomalies were determined and based on these data geoelectrical, and IP profiles were planned, to be able to follow the graphite body also underground. A comparison of the different measurement methods was made to verify the results. Special attention was paid to the IP data analysis and the subsequent model calculation. The results show clear indications of different graphite deposits. The comparability of the several methods is clearly confirmed.
