Abstract

A material and a heat treatment concept for the production of stainless fasteners for construction industries were developed. Five martensitic steels were high-temperature-gas-nitrided. In addition, a test concept was developed, which proves the suitability of the materials under the given boundary conditions. This concept has been applied to the materials and heat treatment combinations. All materials were checked for pitting corrosion resistance and stress corrosion cracking resistance and additionally their mechanical properties. Because of a higher practical relevance, a new testing method for stress corrosion cracking tests under constant load was established on the basis of a corrosion test of “Bundesanstalt für Materialprüfung”. The newly developed test alloy with 14% chromium proves after all tests the highest suitability for use as a material for fastening. It turns out that preliminary simulations of the heat treatment process allow precise statements about the material condition after the nitriding process. So the material can be made suitable for the given boundary conditions.
