Abstract

The rising demand for magnesium alloys in the automotive and electrical industry in the last years has caused increasing quantities of magnesium scrap. The recycling of this material is an important fact for the economy and the environment and it is a big challenge concerning the smelting process. The use of magnesium alloys leads to a mixture of several materials since these materials worsen the recycling process and so it is not possible at the moment to meet the recycling rates. The proposed recycling concepts in this thesis show that the recycling rates could be met with optimized and different recycling processes. The use and handling of magnesium at the storage, the transportation, the casting and in the smelting process is very dangerous. Therefore it was necessary, to examine the important parameters for the storage and make some different experiments concerning the cleaning of magnesium chips. Coated magnesium scrap is a critical fact for the smelting process. Therefore it is useful to investigate the corrosion behaviour of magnesium combined with different materials.
