Abstract
Boxmark GmbH & Co KG is a southeastern Styrian manufacturer of premium leather with a strong environmental awareness. Therefore the company operates waste water treatment plants at each company site. As a part of the waste water treatment the produced sewage sludge is dewatered for further external utilization. Since 2011 the sludge dewatering is done with so-called Bucher presses which are hydraulic filter presses produced by the Swiss com-pany Bucher Unipektin AG. The test operation of the Bucher presses showed that the chemicals used for the cleaning process were not able to reach high degrees of purification without damaging the filter hoses. When it was cleaned the filter material generally had to be changed after one further pressing batch. Therefore the objective of this thesis was to find cleaning chemicals with a high cleaning power, but without damaging effects on the filter hoses or other components of the Bucher press. The cleaning processes in a Bucher press were simulated with chemical and physical tests. In addition the chemical resistance of the Bucher components was examined. Finally, one of the most promising combinations of chemicals was used directly in the Bucher press during a full-scale test to verify the laboratory tests.
