Abstract

The objective of this thesis is the construction of a test station for laser optical measurings of liquid films falling on an inclined plate. The method used to examine the liquid films is called particle image velocimetry (PIV), which allows to determine the velocity field of tracer particles suspended in the liquid. A literature study of test rigs of previous theses is used to design and construct a test station, which matches several requirements. One is to be able to examine a wide range of inclination angles giving the opportunity to emulate different packing materials and their structures that are commonly found in packed columns. To ensure a genuine emulation of packed columns it is also required to be able to adjust the thickness and the volumetric flow rate of the test fluids. The test station is designed to minimize the possibility of dead zones and therefore the deposition of tracer particles, which are needed for PIV measurements. Another requirement is the possibility to have exchangeable plates making it possible to analyze film flows over a micro-structured plate. This would have the advantage of being able to utilize real packing materials in the future and further develop the understanding in this area, as there have only been few researches conducted in this matter so far.
