The importance of the automation of material flows and storage systems has increased in recent years and especially in the past year. This is also seen when looking at the sales of companies in this industry, which achieve new records year after year. When planning and designing warehouse automation solutions, one is inevitably confronted with the challenge of having to make technological decisions that essentially determine the suitability of a system for fulfilling its purpose. At the core of the requirements and thus also of the selection criteria are always the business goals and business processes of the respective organization. This thesis tries to make a proposal for a procedure how to translate these organizational goals into warehouse or automation relevant metrics and how to apply them to the technologies available on the market. It is essential to translate the requirements of business processes such as production supply, shipping picking, etc. into metrics that allow meaningful conclusions about logistics design factors. The theoretically elaborated topics are tested in the form of the designed approach in the practical part of the thesis using the example of Knorr-Bremse Mödling GmbH.
