Abstract
Within the sinter crushing and processing operations at the Breitenau plant of RHI Magnesita GmbH, process-related fine fractions are generated inevitably and have not been utilized to date. The primary objective of the feasibility study conducted within the framework of this master¿s thesis was the development of an appropriate processing concept for the targeted recovery and utilization of fine particles generated at various locations throughout the plant. The fine-grain fraction, upgraded through an additional processing stage, is intended to be reintegrated into the existing production process to improve resource efficiency in accordance with the principles of a zero-waste strategy. The processing-related investigations focused on a thorough assessment of the current state, particularly the resulting mass flows and particle size distributions. These investigations aimed to identify the processing unit most suitable for producing the desired fine-grain fraction. Separation tests on both laboratory and pilot scale were conducted with two grain fractions of a representative sinter grade using a zig-zag classifier. During these tests, the operating parameters were systematically varied to evaluate their influence on separation efficiency and fine-fraction yield. Simultaneously, potential locations for integrating the additional processing stage were assessed. Accordingly, the feasibility study considered not only process engineering requirements, but also site-specific conditions and aspects related to conveying technology. The experimental investigations demonstrated that the integration of a zig-zag classifier enables reliable separation of the fine-grain fraction. In combination with pneumatic conveying, this approach represents a technically feasible solution for the near-complete reintegration of the generated fines within the plant into the production process.
