Abstract

Within this work a thermomechanical characterization of single- and two-layer paint films for coil-coated steel sheets was carried out by thermomechanical analysis and tensile testing. On the one hand, for a basecoat film the effect of pigment and filler concentration on the properties was investigated. On the other hand, for primer, midcoat and topcoat films a comprehensive characterization of the thermomechanical properties was done. The amount of pigment has no effect on the glass transition temperature (Tg). Regarding the mechanical properties, a significant embrittlement with increasing pigment content and a linear correlation to the elastic modulus values was ascertained. Mapping of the specimen thickness of highly transparent topcoat films by an interferometric method yielded a maximum deviation of 10%. For midcoat films with varying UV-curing times no effect on Tg was found. The evaluation of various displacement measurement techniques exhibited that the applied videoextensiometer allows for the required accuracy und reliability. As to the stress-strain behaviour of the paint films well-known relationships between mechanical values and the deformation rate were established. By investigation of single- and two-layer films it was ascertained, that the brittle layer has a significant effect on the stress-strain-behaviour. The best formability was obtained for a two-layer film consisting of a flexible midcoat and the topcoat.
