Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the importance of metal droplets dispersed in BOF
slag on the overall refining kinetics. To this end, the droplet generation in the hot
spot vicinity and their behavior during their residence in the slag was studied by
mathematical modelling. Previously, the consensus has been to focus on fine
droplet dispersion when modelling BOF emulsion refining processes. The results of
this study indicate that the focus should be on mass transfer between the larger
droplets (d > 3 mm) and the slag when modelling emulsion refining.
