Abstract

During the production of ductile graphite iron with the tundish cover process extensive dense fumes of oxide products arise during magnesium treatment. This fume rises up in the air uncontrolled and causes an increased dust loading of the working environment. An industrial partner (Eisenwerk Sulzau-Werfen) aspires to develop and to optimize a production processes in both ecological and qualitative terms. Furthermore, the firm wants to improve the working conditions of its employees. The company is therefore striving to change the production of large scale ductile graphite iron castings to an automated cored wire treatment. With this method the fume can be extracted systematically. In this work the current understanding and work practices for the production of ductile iron with the cored wire treatment are presented to find an improvement for the fabrication on large scales. Therefore, a new facility was built in the foundry which consisted of a 3t casting ladle, a self designed cover plate and a spool-in machine with control unit. With this equipment experiments were performed to assess the magnesium extraction and desulphurization after the cored wire treatment, the fading behaviour of magnesium, the temperature loss of the melt, the fume development, over treatment and mixing with under treated melt. Finally experimental castings were performed to test the quality of the final products. This work examines basic information on ductile iron and its production methods. It describes the realized experiments and includes the results of the research.
