Abstract
This thesis investigates the optimization potential of blasting operations at the Styrian Erzberg. The objective was to systematically analyze the relationships between blasting parameters, geological conditions and the resulting blasting performance and to derive approaches for improving blast design. To extend the existing data basis, Measurement While Drilling (MWD)-data as well as results from photogrammetric fragmentation analysis were incorporated in addition to conventional planning and operational parameters. MWD-data enable the continuous recording of drilling-related parameters and thus provide an indirect characterization of rock mass properties. A MATLAB-based application was developed for the integration, processing and visualization of the collected data. A principal component analysis was performed on the MWD-data, with the first principal component proving to be a suitable indicator for describing geological conditions. A comparison with borehole camera recordings showed that significant signal variations correlate with zones of reduced rock mass strength. Furthermore, the analysis of mean values of the first principal component allows for a differentiation between distinct lithological units. In addition, the fragmentation of the blasted material was determined for 17 blasts using photogrammetric methods. The resulting k80 values show considerable variability both within and between different lithological zones, highlighting the influence of geological conditions as well as operational objectives. The developed methodology enables a data-driven extension of current practice and, in particular, provides a basis for the derivation of optimization measures on a quantitative level through the integration and visualization of all relevant parameters.
