Abstract

The need for lightweight construction in the automotive industry is rising. For this reason, the proportion of aluminium and its alloys has increased significantly in recent years. Particularly in the field of electromobility, the reduction of vehicle weight plays an important role to achieve greater battery ranges. Moreover, the CO2 emissions of cars with conventional combustion engines can be reduced. In this context, extruded aluminium profiles of the 6xxx as well as 7xxx family show great potential. In addition to a literature review on the natural aging effect on alloys of the 6xxx family, this work includes investigations on the optimization of the stabilization treatment in the AlMgSi system after extrusion. For this purpose, various tests were carried out to observe the effect of storage at room temperature between the alloys 6060 (Mg+Si low), 6005 as well as 6082 (Mg+Si high) and subsequently to find an optimal heat treatment strategy for the process. In the course of the work, it became apparent that for all three alloys a stabilization temperature of 120 °C for a period of 4 hours achieves the best results. For the alloys 6082 as well as 6005, a strength increase of 15 MPa can be achieved compared to a heat treatment strategy without stabilization. For alloy 6060, even 26 MPa could be achieved.
