Abstract

Spent grain is a by-product of the beer production for what countless recycling methods are available. During the last years an increased number of biomass combustion plants has been commissioned to utilize the energy of spent grains. One of these possibilities is the thermal utilization directly at the location. This is practiced in the brewery Göss in Leoben. The spent grains are burned in a biomass boiler after being mechanically dried for the production of steam, which is used in-plant. The first part of this thesis is about the properties of spent grains, as well as its suitability as biofuel. Moreover it goes into detail about the different species of drying followed by furnace types and the necessary waste gas treatments. The second part of this thesis describes and evaluates the technologically and economically possibilities to rise the total yield from the spent grains. Among these optimisation steps rank a calculation of combustion of the spent grains from Göss and furthermore an energy balance for the respective utilization possibilities.
