The unpredictable nature of climate change does not stop at iron and steel metallurgy. Anthropogenic CO2 emissions amount to around 36.4 billion tons per year, of which the EU accounts for around 10%. With 221 million tons of CO2, the iron and steel industry is responsible for 5.7% of European emissions. Hydrogen Plasma Smelting Reduction (HPSR) is one of the most promising technologies for CO2-free steel production. The Chair of Iron and Steel Metallurgy at the Montanuniversitaet Leoben has researched this technology for three decades with its own experimental reactor. In this process, fine ore is introduced via a hollow electrode and reduced by means of hydrogen-argon plasma, which favors the reaction both due to the at least partially ionized state of the hydrogen and due to the high temperatures involved. This work aims to determine optimal process parameters for a continuous process. A literature review in the first part of this thesis presents various influences on reduction kinetics with hydrogen plasma. Here, process parameters such as the hydrogen content in the supplied gas as well as the chemical analysis and the basicity of the iron ore used are discussed. The experimental part includes three test series with continuous charging. The two process parameters charging rate and hydrogen content were considered and the effects on process duration and specific hydrogen consumption were determined. It is shown that high ore feed rates with low hydrogen contents during charging achieve the best results. Furthermore, a value for a reduction constant used in the literature is also confirmed. Finally, an outlook on further aspects to be considered is given. Thereby, the upscaling of a pilot reactor is predominant.
