Abstract
In the mineral processing routine of the VAErzbergGmbH the valuable mineral spateisenstein has to be separated from the non valuable mineral ankerite. The iron content of ankerite is too low for industrial use in the Austrian blast furnace operations. To improve the selectivity the Steiner process i.e. the mineral selective magnetizing flash roasting was developed at the institute of mineral processing. Spateisenstein selectively turns into a ferromagnetic oxide phase while ankerite remains unchanged. By means of conventional low intensity magnetic separation ankerite can be discarded. The magnetic, iron rich concentrate has to be agglomerated for the use in the blast furnace. The present paper deals with the investigation on the magnetic concentrate to find an optimum pelletizing feed to meet the predefined quality requirements. After extensive characterization of the physical properties, the magnetic product was ground in a ball mill to achieve the sufficient pelletizing dispersity. The pelletizing tests were performed batchwise in a laboratory pelletizing disc followed by continuous tests. The produced green pellets were dried and indurated afterwards. The optimum pelletizing mixture was found in the small scale batch tests by varying paramters such as fineness of the ore and admixture of various binders. From the results the conditions for the continuous tests were derived. The data set was used to dimension an industrial scale pelletizing disc.
