Abstract

As part of the project concerning the next mining phase (Phase 5) of the Yellowstone Mine operated by Imerys Talc North America, a small scale stability analysis was done. Therefore, bench by bench maps were created to show areas of concern by looking at faults, contacts, fracture orientation, rock characteristics, joint sets and other paths of failure. Special attention was given the volcanic unit and the Reef fault intersecting along the Phase 5 Ramp. For every potential risk, possible mitigation measures were looked at in detail for costs, installation and technical limits and compared to one another with a list of Pro's and Con's. Due to the small scale and the safe mine plan it is unlikely that severe failures will occur in Phase 5.
