Abstract

In Austria, there are several companies producing quality assured alternative fuel and ThermoTeam Alternativbrennstoff GmbH (ThermoTeam) in Retznei is one of them. In the plant waste is processed into high quality solid recovered fuel (EBS) that is used for energy recovery in their nearby located cement plant. The aim of the present cooperation was to check the feasibility in case of expanding the plant in order to achieve higher quality and better homogenization of the SRF called “EBS PREMIUM Quality”. Do to extensive sampling at six different production days and subsequent chemical-physical analysis of the EBS, substantiated results have been obtained. The quality assured samples taken have been chemically analysed (e. g. caloric value, chlorine content and heavy metals content) and classified (i.e. sieve analysis). In total, six small technical trails and a large scale trail have been performed at the area of ThermoTeam. The reason for the sieve analysis is an idea that a separation of the EBS fine fraction will lead to an (significant) improvement in combustion properties of the residual material. The proof should be provided via subsequent chemical tests. The evaluations of the extensive investigations of the EBS have shown that the separation of the EBS-fine fraction and a subsequent shredding improved the quality of the produced “EBS PREMIUM Quality neu”. Especially the combustion properties benefit from this additional treatment. “EBS PREMIUM Quality neu” is suitable for usage in primary firing of cement kiln. The remaining fine fraction can be used in secondary firing system. The results gained from the presented investigations have been used as a basis for technical and economic planning of a large scale implementation. Two scenarios have been discussed and evaluated. Scenario A considers screening of the SRF only and it would be installed at the end of the production line, splitting the EBS in a high caloric “EBS PREMIUM Quality neu” and a medium caloric EBS fine fraction. In the scenario B, "EBS PREMIUM Quality neu" produced is processed in a further fine shredder which increases the combustion properties of the material. Finally, scenario A is given the priority as the additional shredding step is currently not of great importance for the main costumers of the ThermoTeam.
