Abstract

The new regulation amendment for the landfill of waste from 2021 stipulates an Austria-wide ban on the landfilling of artificial mineral fibers starting in 2027. The category of artificial mineral fibers includes mineral wool, which is mainly used as insulation material in the construction industry. Due to a lack of alternatives mineral wool waste currently is disposed of exclusively in landfills. Consequently, economically viable utilization, recovery, or recycling processes for mineral wool waste must be found by 2027. Across Europe, there are a few projects dedicated to researching such new processes. The RecyMin project at the University of Leoben is one of them. One work package in that project focuses on investigating the possibility of recycling mineral wool waste in the cement industry. Potentially it can be utilized there as secondary grinding material in a similar way to granulated blast furnace slag. Therefore within the scope of this thesis, a briquetting, mixing with supplementary materials, thermal treatment, and wet granulation of the primary material rock wool is being carried out. The product of the procedure is a glassy solidified granulate. For the granu- late to be used as a secondary grinding material it must have a certain chemical oxide composition and it needs to fulfill specific requirements. The results of the analyses show that these are met to a first approximation. Granulated rock wool with a modified chemical composition can thus potentially be used as a secondary grinding material in the cement industry.
