Renewable Energy Generation and Consumption in the Aggregate Sector

Abstract

This thesis aims to highlight the need for self-energy generation from renewable sources in quarries and increase the share of renewables in total energy consumption. A narrative literature review, data analysis of the energy consumption profile and a decision-making survey from pilot sites were conducted to do so. Key findings include the identification of significant drivers and barriers to renewable energy implementation, such as regulatory frameworks, cost considerations, and environmental impact. The analysis of pilot sites revealed varying energy consumption patterns and highlighted the potential for significant energy efficiency improvements. A decision-making guideline tool was developed to assist mining companies in selecting suitable renewable energy systems. The tool, validated with pilot site data, considers factors such as energy source availability, investment capability, load profiles, and personnel capacities. Results indicate solar PV and wind energy as the most promising options for the aggregate sector, with power purchase agreements providing flexibility for companies with limited capital. The economic and environmental evaluation of integrating a solar PV plant into the mining operation confirms its financial viability and attractiveness, with positive long-term returns indicated by cashflow analysis, NPV, IRR, and PI. The sensitivity analysis further supports these robust economic outcomes despite variations in key variables. Additionally, the solar PV plant significantly reduces energy consumption and achieves substantial annual CO2 savings. This dual assessment validates the solar PV plant as a sustainable and profitable solution for the mining operation.
