Abstract

As part of the Paris Climate Agreement, the international community has agreed on binding measures to limit climate change for the first time. Consequently, the Austrian federal government aims to completely phase out fossil fuels by 2040. Energie AG, Upper Austria's leading energy supplier, must prepare for the energy system changes resulting from these measures. These tasks include integrating new technology trends and managing the volatility in energy production. This volatility results from the increased generation of energy from renewable sources. Therefore, this work aims to identify bottlenecks in the future electrical grid. It uses a temporally and spatially resolved model of Upper Austria's energy system. The model performs load flow calculations in the HyFlow simulation tool to identify the most critical grid infrastructure. Methods will be developed to eliminate these bottlenecks with the help of sector-coupling hybrid elements. These simulations are carried out in coordination with the client for the years 2030 and 2040. The methods developed to relieve the electricity grid include battery storage, and power-to-gas as well as power-to-heat applications. Based on an evaluation of the utilization of the electricity grid in the respective calculation year, these methods are developed by analyzing the generation and residual load profiles of the substation districts distributed throughout Upper Austria. The goal is to minimize peaks in generation and load to achieve a smoothing of the generation and load profile. The results show that the use of power-to-gas plants can contribute to reducing the increased utilization of the grid infrastructure caused by increased renewable energy generation. However, the use of hybrid elements to relieve the grid is only part of the solution, as the changes in the energy system are so serious that multiple measures will need to be taken.
