Abstract
In recent years, the way companies offer products and services has increasingly shifted toward servitization. This means that companies expand their traditional product offerings by adding supplementary services. This trend enables production and logistics systems to unlock new opportunities and competitive advantages. Alongside the various benefits associated with servitization, a wide range of challenges arises too.
The aim of this thesis is to identify and present the application areas, opportunities, and challenges of servitization and to develop recommendations for action for the company SLOC. SLOC is a company that manufactures and sells different kind of sensors and provides its own platform and business intelligence solutions. The identified application areas and opportunities are intended to support SLOC in strengthening existing business fields and in developing new sales channels and strategies in the future.
The first part of the thesis consists of a conventional literature review that establishes the theoretical foundations. In the second part, a systematic literature review (SLR) was conducted in the “Scopus” database in accordance with the PRISMA standard. Current studies are compared and the state of the art is assessed. In the third part, expert interviews were conducted with seven selected experts. Experts from various leading companies, as well as authors and doctoral researchers, were interviewed. The interviews were analysed using Kuckartz’s structured qualitative content analysis approach.
In the fifth part, based on the systematic literature review and the expert interviews, the application areas, opportunities, and challenges arising from and associated with servitization are defined, summarized, and presented. The sixth part compares the findings from the SLR and the expert interviews and examines similarities and distinctive aspects. Building on these insights, the seventh part develops and defines specific recommendations for action and application areas for SLOC.
