Abstract

By applying a specific pyrometallurgical process, zinc-containing dusts from the iron and steel industry can be melted allowing zinc and iron to be recovered separately. This "recycling process" of zinc is realized by means of the RecoDust process. Natural gas is used as a reducing agent and simultaneously as a fuel gas and energy medium. The European project "P058-EU-02-67" aims to operate the steel mill process and all subsequent processes for the recycling of, for instance zinc, with reduced CO2 emission. The Chair of Thermoprocess Engineering, the High Temperature Process Engineering Team and Voestalpine Stahl Donawitz GmbH have thus undertaken the task of operating the RecoDust process with a mixture of natural gas and hydrogen to make it attractive and climate-neutral for the upcoming energy transition. For this purpose, a new hydrogen control system and its integration into the existing natural gas injection system of the RecoDust process is required. This master¿s thesis deals with the entire process of procuring this hydrogen control line, including the storage of the hydrogen and its blending with natural gas. In addition, the external regulatory communication as well as the communication with internal departments was conducted. Prior to the entire project, a start-up HAZOP study was conducted to evaluate any potential hazards. With these initial findings, the first key points for the plant were elaborated and were thereafter discussed as well as implemented with external suppliers. After the installation of the plant, a final HAZOP study for internal documentation, but also for the safety-related design of the step chains in case of emergency shutdowns and for the submission of the entire plant to the authorities was prepared and subsequently elaborated. The result was the delivery a plant ready for warm commissioning, which can be put into operation without any concerns due to the safety considerations and their follow-up measures.
