Abstract
The aim of this work was the reinvestigation of the Upper Jurassic carbonat-platform resediments and the underlying formations in the Zwerchwand-Hoher Rosenkogel area (Bad Goisern, Austria). By means of detailed geological investigations, biostratigraphic and microfacies analysis of the formations following expertise could be gained: In previous times these carbonate breccias were characterised as Tressenstein limestone. The carbonate breccias are in fact, by means of microfacies and stratigraphic investigations, Oberalm Formation with Barmstein Limestone. The Barmstein Limestone of the Zwerchwand, which are separated by a NW-SE fault from the Hoher Rosenkogel, overlie directly the mobile Alpine Haselgebirge, which is the hanging wall of the Hallstatt Melange. The stratigraphic sequence of the Hoher Rosenkogel shows a complete different continuous Jurassic profile, and is not overlying the Hallstatt Melange and the Alpine Haselgebirge. On the basis of these conclusions a better possibility of prediction of mass movements in the central Salzkammergut is discussed.
