Abstract

The company SKAPA operates a mechanical processing plant for non-ferrous metals in Kottingbrunn. The plant has an approved annual capacity of 20,000 t. Valuable materials in the form of Al and Fe metals and impurities are separated to obtain a pure Used Beverage Cans (UBC) fraction for direct material recycling. Both high organic and wet content reduce the quality of the output and lead to limited applications in secondary smelters. Furthermore, output fractions are produced that have further potential for recycling, but currently have to be disposed of as contaminants. The objective of this work is to survey the current status of a metal sorting plant for Used Beverage Cans (UBC) and to investigate technical optimization potentials for increasing the output qualities. In the first section, the relevant plant components are described and material flows and designations are defined. In addition, all currently used treatment processes are described. In the next step, the material flows are examined qualitatively. In the course of this, a scheme for sampling the material flows in the plant is presented. The results of the sorting tests and sieve analyses of these samples, together with the results of the routine controls, are summarized and critically discussed. The recyclable material potentials of the output streams UBC, "light fraction from classifier 01", "aluminum waste residue" and "SNE" will be collected and evaluated. On the basis of this data, further processing options will be worked out in relation to the material streams and issues concerned. This is a purely technical consideration of the possibilities and is intended to serve as a basis for further considerations.
